Tobin
Manufacturing
was established in 1974 by John Tobin's father Jack Tobin as a manufacturer
of a two component positive displacement meter/mix/dispense machines
to dispense polyurethane elastomers into molds for high volume production.
Jack relied on his formal training as a chemical engineer, combined
with over 20 years designing and selling multi-component meter-mix equipment,
to satisfy the need for reliable and accurate metering machines for
the urethane industry. He understood established mixing principles wherein
blade and baffle designs maximize turbulent mixing and incorporated
those principles in his mixer designs. The Dub-l-Bar machine was the
equipment of choice by the majority of manufacturers in the rapidly
expanding skate board wheel industry. Typical production runs of 10,000
to 12,000 parts each day were common.
Over the years the equipment gained a reputation for its metering accuracy,
versatility and simplicity. Applications expanded to castor wheels,
fuel tank liners, automotive body styling kit components, foam and elastomer
filter gaskets, rotationally molded mannequins and myriad other parts.
The machine was found especially versatile for molding prototype parts
due to the ability to economically process small quantities of product
and switch from system-to-system quickly. The key design feature assuring
metering accuracy was the ability of both metering cylinders to move
proportionally at the same rate regardless of ratio changes.
The equipment is especially suited for processing urethane elastomers
filled with various fillers, including calcium carbonate, barium sulfate,
aluminum tri-hydrate, micro-balloons, and other abrasive fillers. Because
there is no metal-to-metal contact in our unique metering cylinders,
the wear experienced in other types of cylinders and gear or progressive
cavity pumps is absent.
Today, John Tobin continues the creative tradition of his father, Jack,
and manages production, product development and field technical support
for the entire line of Tobin Manufacturing, LLC products.
Sales and marketing of Tobin equipment is handled by John’s partner
Bill Shaw who has over 35 years experience in urethane processing. Bill
was a partner in Decker Industries, Inc. in Palm City, Florida serving
as Sales and Marketing Director from 1981 until 1998 when the company
was sold. He continued selling the firm’s low and high pressure
urethane processing machines until Decker was again sold and relocated
to Ohio.
